Here's another selection of Early Reggae instrumentals for your listening enjoyment that focuses on organ instrumentals. The organ has played an integral role in the development of reggae. The organ first appeared on a few ska instrumentals and grew in importance through the rocksteady era, but really came into it's own during the early reggae period from roughly 1968 through 1974 or so. Even through the mid 70's through the early 80's the organ was still widely used but eventually fell out of fashion once synthesizers became popular with JA's session musicians. The Music: Early Reggae, Original Ska & Rocksteady from the 60's & 70's.
The early Reggae years from 1968-1973 were filled with keyboard instrumentals from Jamaican keyboardists like Winston Wright, Jackie Mittoo, Ansell Collins, Neville Hinds, and Glen Adams. These cuts were mostly inspired by American Soul-Jazz and Funk a la Jimmy McGriff, Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith, Johnny Hammond, and Booker T. Jones who were all cutting some serious funk in the late 60's and early 70's. Here's a selection of some popular and lesser known Hammond Reggae cuts straight outta the Early Reggae Era.
