Organic Reggae Sounds from the 60's & 70's
Here's another selection of Early Reggae instrumentals for your listening enjoyment that focuses on organ instrumentals. The organ has played an integral role in the development of reggae. The organ first appeared on a few ska instrumentals and grew in importance through the rocksteady era, but really came into it's own during the early reggae period from roughly 1968 through 1974 or so. Even through the mid 70's through the early 80's the organ was still widely used but eventually fell out of fashion once synthesizers became popular with JA's session musicians. The following tracks are all original 45's out of JA or the

This thursday night @ The Make-Out Room in SF a very special benefit for cancer:
"Festival '68"
We are dedicating this night in December (10th) to honor Vanessa's uncle, Len Lucero, who passed away in October. He had stage 4 cancer that eventually spread from his esophagus to his lungs and hip. On top of Len's medical expenses, his wife, broke her ankle 2 months ago causing her to miss a month's worth of work.
Please join us for this fundraiser in his honor with DJs and a band. This will be a fun event to celebrate Vanessa's uncle, spread some love, and remember it feels good to help others in need. It's going to be a fantastic night!

Louisa Marks RIP 1960 - Oct 17 2009
Louisa 'Markswoman' Mark was voted top female reggae vocalist of 1978 ahead of Marcia Griffith. Her sweet vocal style and updated rock steady rhythms have made her a Queen of Lovers Rock.
The fledgling singer cut her first record at the age of 15 for sound system operator Lloyd Coxone, 'Caught you in a lie', proved a huge hit amongst the reggae-listening audience, a heartfelt cry of misplaced trust, then followed by another monster success entitled 'All My Loving'. Despite popularity, Louisa quit recording for over 18 months because of contractual desputes.
She was then linked up with house producer and A&R manager for Trojan Records Clem Bushay, veteran of the UK reggae scene, cutting her next hit 'Keep it Like This'. Again the song was well received but poor promotion proved disillusioning and despite the terms of her one year contract she declined to record further.
Once free from Trojan, Louisa Mark music began to take off. Her rendition of Michael Jackson's 'Even Though You're Gone' was released on the Bushays label and sold well. She followed this up with 6, Six Street penned by Joe Charles, Clem Bushay and The In Crowd, which hit the number one spot in its first week of release.
Louisa died of poisoning on Saturday 17th October 2009 in the Gambia where she was living at the time.
RIP Louisa - a true legend

The Fastest Man In The World - Comes From Yard! Usain Bolt!
In the 200 meters at Berlin, Panama’s Alonso Edward finished closest to Bolt, though one is not sure if the word “near” can be used to talk about someone who was 0.62 of a second behind. The 200 meters world record perhaps carries a little more significance as it had been broken only four times since electronic timing began in 1977 — Bolt broke it the fifth time.
Now, Bolt is the Olympic and world champion in both 100 and 200 meters and holds both world records — it’s something no one has done before. And to think of it, Bolt, six foot five, was once considered too tall to be a sprinter as tall men are slower off the blocks.
Big ups and 'nuff respect to Usain Bolt, and to all the people of Jamaica.

The Nun Who Fostered Ska, Rocksteady & Reggae
The history of Jamaican music is loaded with examples and stories from singers, musicians, producers, and promoters who never recieved the popular recognition that they desereved. This is especially true for women in Jamaican music, as they rarely receive the widespread notoriety that males in Jamaican music receive. One example of this phenomena is in the story of Sister Mary Ignatius Davies (1921-2003), who ran the music program at Alpha School for wayward boys in Kingston. The names of the alumni who have passed through Alpha and Sister Mary's music program reads like a list of all-time Reggae and Jazz masters from Jamaica including Joe Harriott, Lennie Hibbert, Bertie King, Tony Gregory, Owen Gray, David Madden, Lester Sterling, Wilton "Bogey" Gaynair, Leroy Smart, Don Drummond, Tommy McCook, Leslie Thompson who conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, Cedric "Im" Brooks, Rico Rodriguez, Joseph "Jo-Jo" Bennett, Eddie "Tan-Tan" Thornton, Tony Greene, "Deadly" Headly Bennett, "Dizzy" Johnny Moore, Reuben Delgado, Oscar Clarke trumpeter who toured with Louis Armstong's Band, Johnny Osbourne, Floyd Lloyd, Bobby Ellis, Eddie Thornton, "Sparrow" Martin who now teaches at the school, Vin Gordon, Harold Mcnair, Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, and the audacious Winston Foster AKA Yellowman.
Unfortunately, her name is only known to Jamaicans and the expatriate community, as well as to hardcore reggae enthusiasts and collectors. This is tragic since her name and story should be as well known as Bob Marley's or Dennis Brown's.
Back in 2007, BBC Caribbean put together an excellent oral history of Sister Iggy, her sound system dances, and the young men that she inspired. Take a listen below and hear the story that has rarely been told outside of Jamaica. Honor & Respect to Sister Mary Ignatius Davies for enriching our lives!
