The following review is a great example of what we are talking about.

Moonstomping At The Oakland Metro Opera House

I want all you skinheads

to get up on your feet

Put your braces together and your boots on your feet

It's a safe bet that nearly every skinhead, rude boy, mod or reggae fanatic has heard, chanted along with, imitated or quoted the above lines at some point in their lives. To many, Symarip's classic "Skinhead Moonstomp" song (and album of the same name) is an all time favorite that exists only in recorded format, most fans (myself included) perishing the thought of ever witnessing any of Symarip's near-sacred tracks performed live on stage. What an amazing treat to the lucky few who entered the Oakland Metro Opera House on October 30, 2010, when Roy Ellis, lead singer and songwriter of Symarip, took the stage for a 19-song set revisiting his hallowed back catalog and several recently recorded outings. Backed admirably by the solid Sand Dollar Sound, and billing himself under his recent recording name, Mr. Symarip, Ellis kicked off a spirited show that drew out the dedicated from all corners of the country. This date was a rare treat indeed. Ellis has made very few US appearances, usually working the European festival circuit; this fact was made abundantly clear by the number of times I overheard the comment, "I can't believe he's playing here!"

Kicking off with "Wang Yu," a track from his last full length release, The Skinheads Dem A Come, Ellis took the band through their paces, touching on a few of the strongest songs on the album (including the extremely catchy title track) before stepping back in time for a breathtaking "Must Catch A Train," with horns reproduced note-perfectly by the brass section, which featured a guesting trumpeter, Rick Kendrick, from the Bay Area's own soul outfit, The Inciters.

Ellis next rolled into "Chicken Merry," which was rendered faithfully, right down to the "clucking hen" guitar parts. This attention to sound detail became more evident as the show went on. Ellis was determined that each track was performed exactly as he required. "Wait, wait. Rewind!" he would announce a few bars into a song. "Faster, please." The band would kick in at a faster pace, and the songs would continue. Perfectionism aside, there was still room for fluidity. At one point Ellis invited each brass player a chance to solo, which they did marvelously, with only one player politely declining.

Quality musicianship wasn't the only showmanship to grace the stage. Ellis, who must be in his 60's (an exact age is difficult to come by on internet searches), performed with the energy of a 20 year old, breaking into some acrobatic shoulder rolls across the stage. His energy level never diminished, and he truly came across as a man who loves his fans and his work.

The soulful trio of "Stay With Him," "You're Mine" and "Try Me Best" provided a bit of a breather for the man and the crowd before Ellis brought on stage a large box of bananas to hand out to those in need of a snack during--of course--the famed "Banana" song (recently covered by The Aggrolites on the kid favorite TV show, Yo Gabba Gabba, as a testament to its enduring power to entertain).

The final part of the set was performed exactly as seen on youtube clips from around the world: ladies en masse invited on stage to dance during "Skinhead Girl," probably Symarip's second best known track, ("No, just the girls!" Ellis clarified for two skinhead gentlemen who got up with the group). The room was alight with cameras and phones held aloft by the males left in the audience, ready to capture this scene.

"Skinhead Girl" won rapturous applause and was followed by an invite for the fellas immediately afterwards. A hearty cluster of men bounded on stage for their anthem, "Skinhead Moonstomp." "Careful, stand back a bit, I'm an old guy," Ellis requested as he arranged the group for the song. Skinhead cameraderie was at its peak for this number, and a concert hall full of baritone sing along "yeah, yeah, yeah's" was pure Spirit of '69 glory.

A final trip down memory lane, in the form of "These Boots Were Made For Stomping," and the night was at a close. Mr. Symarip saw his fans off with a rendition of his latest 7" single, "Shine Shine Shine."

And shine he did. Brilliantly.

Roots singer Lincoln ‘Sugar’ Minott, who influenced a new generation of reggae artistes in the 1980s, died at the University Hospital of the West Indies Saturday evening at the age of 54.

Minott’s wife, Maxine Stowe, confirmed his passing yesterday but gave no cause of death. The singer had cancelled shows in Canada in May after reports that he had experienced chest pains.

Minott was best known for roots anthems like Vanity, Mr DC, No Vacancy and Herbman Hustling. But he was just as adept belting out lovers rock songs such as Lovers Race and Good Thing Going.

Good Thing Going was originally done in 1972 by the Jackson Five. Minott’s reggae version entered the British national chart in 1981 and remained his biggest commercial success.

He was also a prolific producer at his Youthman Promotions company which recorded countless upcoming acts. Tristan Palmer, Tenor Saw, Little John, Barry Brown, Yami Bolo, Garnet Silk and Junior Reid all recorded for the label which Minott started in 1979.

He co-produced Foreign Mind, Reid’s first big hit. Yesterday, Reid remembered Minott as someone who did ‘great works’.

“Him gi a lotta strength to the music but neva get a lotta love from the business,” said Reid.

Born in the Maxfield Avenue area of Kingston, Sugar Minott was strongly inspired by rocksteady singers John Holt and Alton Ellis. He started his career in the early 1970s as a member of the African Brothers vocal group but went solo later that decade at the famed Studio One with producer Clement ‘Coxson’ Dodd.

Using rocksteady beats from the 1960s, Minott, Freddie McGregor and Willie
Williams led a Studio One revival One during the late 1970s. Among his songs for Dodd were the breakthrough Mr DC and Vanity.

Minott became a regular on mainstream radio in the early 1980s with rockers such as Herbman Hustling, Lovers Race and Dancehall Stylee. He also toured Japan, promoting the emerging dancehall culture.

In a 2003 interview, Minott said he was disappointed his career never took off internationally. He blamed that on poor management and un-professional record companies.

“Independent companies don’t market the artiste, they market the albums,” he said. “If yuh don’t have a label like a Virgin or a Columbia wey promote the artiste, then forget it.”

Here's David Rodigan commenting on the state of the current sounds coming out of Jamaica today. He asks "What happened to the sweetness?" in today's dancehall music, a question that we all have asked at one point or another. To those who say that Rodigan plays exactly the same types of dancehall music that he now claims to disdain it needs to be noted that he is a professional radio DJ and the man is playing what the people want. No matter what your opinion of Mr. Rodigan is this interview is truly a joy to watch as it is apparent that his true love is the original 60's & 70's sound of Ska, Rocksteady, & Early Reggae.

You can catch SFVRS selectors Dukey (aka Mark Gorney) alongside Bryan Martin at this weekends Sierra Nevada World Music Festival. They will be selecting revival sounds on Friday night before The Skatalites and on Saturday afternoon before Soul Syndicate and Ken Boothe. This years festival promises to be another scorcher with foundation artists like The Skatalites, Ken Boothe, Big Youth, Vernon Wentworth (of The Maytones), Jimmy Riley, The Soul Syndicate Band, Johnny Clarke, and lots more. David Rodigan will be running session on Friday evening as well. We have heard promising reports from L.A. where he played last night alongside Downbeat The Ruler and he was reported to have drawn 'nuff revive selections!

R.I.P Syd Bucknor

One of the great producers and engineers of Jamaican music and believed to be related to Coxsone Dodd. The initials "S.B." in the matrix generally meant a great recording.

A short tribute by his friend, guitarist Cecil Smith:

Sid Bucknor passed away 9th May 2010 at 14:05. He died of Cancer at the St Charles Hospital, Ladbroke Grove London W10 6BA United Kingdom.

Sid was a giant in the music business. He was instrumental in the development of the Jamaican music sound, Ska, Rock Steady and Reggae. He was a great studio engineer, producer and songwriter. He helped to shape the sound of the music alongside the musicians of the time and pioneered new ways and techniques of capturing the feel and spirit of the music. His contributions to Jamaican music cannot be overlooked. Much of its overwhelming success can be directly attributed his creative genius and pioneering style. He was also a very patient teacher, and was always happy to pass on his knowledge and skills to anyone wishing to learn.

Sid worked with all of the greats in the Jamaican music industry. He recorded and mixed Catch a fire, Burning and Natty dread for Bob Marley and the Wailers. During his long and illustrious career he also recorded mixed or produced all of the other Jamaican greats: Toots and the Maytals, Desmond Dekker, Alton Ellis, BB Seaton, Ken Boothe, John Holt, Bob Andy and lots more, the list is endless, a quick search on Google will confirm this.

He worked at all of the great studios in Jamaica: Dynamics Studio, Federal Studio, Studio one, Channel one, Treasure Isle Studio, Harry J Studios, Randys Studio, King Tubbys, Joe Gibbs Studio just to name a few.

He immigrated to England in 1970 where he continued to spread the sound of Reggae music. He worked at Island's Basing Street Studios, Chalk Farm Studio, BBMC Studio, Hackney Community college Studio, Tony King Studio, Odessa studio and lots more.

He will be sadly missed, the music industry mourns his passing.
