Reggae in England - 1976 (Part 1)

Roy Shirley, Nicky Thomas, Lloydie Coxsone, Larry Lawrence
Narrated by JA music journalist Carl Gayle

Father Peckings: Your Legacy is Safe!

Most collectors know by now that the Peckings label, along with the brilliant Manila Jeepney label, is one of the handful of labels that is releasing quality reggae the way it was meant to be. Take a look at the new Peckings 45 release from Courtney John called "Lucky Man":

George 'Peckings' Price was a longtime friend of Coxsone Dodd and served as Dodd's main UK distributor after moving to England in the 1960's. In 1974 he opened his famous record store at 81 Askew Rd. in London's Shepherd Bush neighborhood. Sadly George Price passed away in 1994, but his legacy has been kept alive by his son Chris who runs the Peckings label and has scored hits with Bitty Mclean, and Lady Lex while utilizing original rocksteady and reggae riddims cut by Duke Reid.

Lloyd Barnes - Godfather of American Reggae

The story of Reggae in America is a story that can not be told unless you start with one man - Lloyd Barnes, AKA Bullwackie. Lloyd Barnes began his career by voicing the song "While I Was Walking" for Prince Buster in the early 60's. Lloyd was a friend and contemporary of artists like Ken Boothe and Stranger Cole. In 1967, Lloyd immigrated from Jamaica to New York City.
In NYC, Barnes started one of the first sound systems in the US (they actually transported their speakers and records boxes to their gigs on the NYC subways!). His sound played the current Rocksteady, and Early Reggae hits coming from Jamaica at the time.
By 1973 Barnes found the Sound System business to be hazardous to his health due to the level of violence that surrounded many of his dances so Lloyd decided to build a studio in his basement. Little did Barnes know that his Wackies Label and productions would signify the heights of the American Reggae industry and transform NYC into a world capital of Reggae on par with cities such as London, and Kingston.

Follow the link below for an in-depth interview with Lloyd done back in 1996 by Ray Hurford and Colin Moore for Small Axe:
Lloyd Barnes Interview

Can't Wait to See This!

Finally the godfathers of Sound System in the UK: Duke Vin and Count Suckle get the historical documentation they deserve! This looks to be a fascinating documentary on early Sound System culture in England.
I had the pleasure of meeting Duke Vin through Bob Brooks, at the Duke's sheebin in Notting Hill, and he spent the entire evening playing me tapes of early Ska and Jamaican R&B. I didn't leave until about 6:00AM the next morning completely rat arsed and red eyed from all the smoke as they keep all the windows shut tightly to conceal the noise of the sound system in what is essentially an illegal drinking den!
